Detour Privacy Policy
The Detour private beta — what stays on your device, what the optional buddy features store, and how to delete it. Last updated 11 October 2026.
Who we are
Detour is a Screen Time and digital-wellbeing app for iPhone and iPad (iOS 18 and later), published by Unum Solutions. This notice describes how the current private beta handles your information. For privacy questions or to request access, correction, or deletion of your data, contact us at info@unumsol.com.
What Detour does
Detour offers voluntary wellness activities, optional prompts before you open selected apps, personal goals with optional on-device reminders, protected on-device Screen Time reports, and an optional private “buddy” circle for invited adult testers. The beta has no payments or subscriptions — the RevenueCat purchase service that ships in the app is inactive.
Information kept on your device
Most of Detour works entirely on your device, with no account. The app stores your onboarding progress, goals, wellness priorities, favorite activities, opaque selected-app tokens, completed wellness history, and any interrupted-break checkpoints locally. Detour does not upload these. (Your device's own backup settings may separately preserve app data.)
Screen Time reports
Apple provides your selected-app usage inside a protected report view. Usage totals, app labels, charts, prior-period comparisons, and hourly patterns stay inside that protected view. Detour keeps only report request dates and view identities to avoid reloading; it does not copy protected results into its own storage or shared containers, and it does not read your usage while the app is closed. Detour never sends Screen Time or inferred usage data to its servers, to buddies, or to any purchase service. Any demonstration reports are fictional and labeled as such.
App prompts and goal alerts
App-launch prompts are a separate opt-in. They use Apple's Managed Settings to shield the apps you choose until you take a break, temporarily continue, or turn prompts off. The app and its helper extensions share only your opt-in, the opaque app selection, a 15-minute pause deadline, and one pending break request, in a local App Group — this is not an app-launch history, and it is not uploaded. If you enable goal alerts, an on-device monitor receives Apple's events when a selected-app goal is reached and keeps a small local ledger to avoid duplicate notifications. Those local records contain no app names or usage totals, are used only to deliver alerts, and are not uploaded.
Sign-in data on your device
If you use the optional buddy account, your sign-in session, the first name Apple provides, pending invitations, message-retry records, and deletion receipts are stored in your device's Keychain to support secure sign-in and recovery. Your local goals and history remain available without an account, and Settings lets you clear completed history and its recovery copies.
Optional buddy accounts and messages
The buddy circle is entirely optional, and it is the only part of Detour that uses our cloud services. To use it you sign in with Apple (existing email-based beta accounts can sign in with a one-time emailed code and then link Apple). We process your Apple identity, an account identifier, your email address (which may be Apple's private-relay address), and your sign-in sessions. Your buddy profile starts from the first name Apple supplies, and you can edit it; accepted buddies see only that display name — not your account identifier or email.
You must review an inviter and explicitly accept before any buddy connection is created, and joining does not turn on sharing automatically. Stored buddy information includes display names, invitation digests and expiry, accepted connections, your sharing choices, the preset check-in messages and replies you exchange, read state, and blocks. Detour does not upload your contacts, offer public discovery, or send automatic usage alerts to buddies. Accepted buddies exchange only deliberate preset messages, and either person can stop sharing, remove, or block the other at any time.
When you sign in, our server exchanges Apple's authorization code so it can later revoke that grant if you delete your account; the signing and encryption keys stay in server secret storage and are never shared with buddies or written to logs.
Service providers
The buddy features rely on a small set of processors, which each receive only the data needed for their function:
- Supabase — accounts and sign-in: your Apple identity, account identifier, email, and sessions.
- Cloudflare — the buddy API and its storage: display names, invitation digests, connections, preset messages and replies, device push registrations, and support reports.
- Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple Push Notification service — delivering buddy notifications (generic text and an opaque message identifier only; see below).
- Resend — sending one-time sign-in codes by email.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, and Screen Time through Apple's own on-device frameworks.
We do not use advertising, analytics, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs in Detour, and the app sets no advertising identifier. It does not collect your location, microphone, camera, photos, or your device's address book.
Notifications
Goal alerts are optional local notifications generated on your device; they work without an account or any push service, and their text names the kind of goal reached without listing your apps or exact usage. If you turn on buddy notifications, Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple's push service deliver them — the push payload is limited to generic text and an opaque message identifier, with no names, message contents, Screen Time, or wellness data. Turning buddy notifications off, or signing out, removes that registration. You can control both kinds of alerts in Settings, and your saved goals and app choices remain either way.
Support, safety, and diagnostics
If you report a concern, we receive the report category, your optional explanation, the relevant account or message references, and the time — accessible only to the beta owner, who can resolve reports and suspend an account. This is not an emergency service. Operational records track request failures, delivery retries, and pending cleanup; diagnostics are designed to exclude sign-in tokens, invitation secrets, email codes, provider grants, message contents, and Screen Time data. Our hosting providers may process standard network and security metadata under their own terms.
Retention and deletion
Buddy messages are retained for up to 30 days and support reports for up to 90 days. Minimal request digests and block records remain while needed to prevent replay and unwanted reconnection during the life of your account. You can stop sharing or delete your buddy account at any time: deletion requires explicit confirmation and fresh Apple (or emailed-code) authorization, immediately blocks access, removes your online buddy data, invalidates your sessions, and requests revocation of the Apple grant. If Apple cannot be reached, your Detour account is still deleted and you are directed to your Apple Account settings to remove access manually.
Deleting your buddy account does not automatically clear your local goals or wellness history — use the in-app controls for those. Removing the app may leave data in a device backup or certain Keychain records, so use account deletion and the local controls first where possible.
Your choices and rights
Every on-device feature — wellness activities, goals, app prompts, and Screen Time reports — works without an account, and the buddy features are opt-in. You can edit your display name, stop sharing, remove or block a buddy, turn notifications off, and delete your buddy account from within the app. To request access to, correction of, or deletion of the information held for your buddy account, contact info@unumsol.com. Depending on where you live you may have additional rights (for example under the GDPR or CCPA), which we will honor for the markets where the beta is offered.
Children
Detour is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13; the buddy circle is for invited adult testers. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes and contact
If we change how Detour handles data, we will update this page and the date above. Questions and privacy requests go to info@unumsol.com.
